Giants hope Mustache May gets them going, helps good cause

SAN FRANCISCO -- At the end of his first session with reporters after he came off the Covid IL, Mike Yastrzemski peered around a thick column in front of his locker at Dodger Stadium and looked over at Mauricio Dubon.

"Dubi, let me see your face," Yastrzemski said.

Dubon smiled and turned toward Yastrzemski. "It's better than last year," he replied.

Dubon was talking about his thin mustache, one he spent all of April waiting to unleash. He didn't shave for the final three weeks of the month, and when the calendar turned, Dubon joined a growing list of Giants taking part in Mustache May. A new stache seems to show up in the clubhouse every day, and this year the Giants also have t-shirts, which support a very good cause.

Slater and other Giants teamed up with BreakingT to create custom Giants-themed Mustache May shirts. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to Bring Change to Mind, a nonprofit organization that aims to end the stigma surrounding mental health issues. That's been an important issue in the Giants clubhouse the last three seasons.

"The fans loved it (last year) and really took to it and we thought it was a great opportunity to set up a charity for a worthwhile cause and have the proceeds of the shirts go toward something," Austin Slater said. "With May being mental health awareness month too, it made a lot of sense, and with that being a really important issue right now, it made perfect sense to join with them. It's great to see the support. It's a fun thing to do. I don't think the wives on the team are very happy about it, but hopefully it will get the guys going a little bit and we can have some fun and have it make an impact."

The Mustache May push started in 2019 with the Giants' Triple-A club and last year Slater and Yastrzemski showed up early in the month with impressive facial hair. Dubon, Logan Webb and LaMonte Wade Jr. joined them over the course of the month, and this season it seems half the clubhouse is either sporting a stache or about to. Wade, Zack Littell and Dominic Leone all returned from the IL with mustaches and Steven Duggar grew a goatee while quarantining with Covid. Sean Hjelle has onem and on Monday night Joey Bart took the plunge, too.

The coaching staff has even gotten involved, with several coaches sporting mustaches and hitting coach Dustin Lind rocking a fu manchu. In recent days, players and coaches have been seen wearing the Mustache May t-shirts in the clubhouse.

Asked to rank his teammates, Slater said Yastrzemski's mustache/sou patch combo is "pretty great" and credited Dubon for the hard work he put in this April. Slater thought "Duggy came in hot with the goatee" and said he has his eye on Curt Casali, who has a thick mustache that doesn't stand out yet because he still has a beard.

"I don't want to give Curt any credit but Curt's is decent," Slater said. "He just needs to shave everything else off."
