Early Zaidi era addition Jaylin Davis moves on to Red Sox

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants had high expectations for Jaylin Davis when he was acquired in 2019, but if he's going to establish himself as a big leaguer, it will have to be elsewhere.

Davis was claimed by the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, a week after he had been designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for right-hander Cory Abbott, who was claimed from the Chicago Cubs

Davis was one of Farhan Zaidi's first trade acquisitions, coming over at the deadline in 2019 when the Giants sent Sam Dyson to the Minnesota Twins as they rebuilt their bullpen. While Davis never stuck at the big league level, that trade still has the potential to work out extremely well for the Giants.

In addition to Davis, they got right-handed prospects Kai-Wei Teng and Prelander Berroa, both of whom have impressed in the minors and shown the potential to join the Giants' staff in the next couple of years. Teng has reached Double-A and the hard-throwing Berroa is off to a dominant start for High-A Eugene.

Dyson hurt his shoulder and later was suspended the entire 2021 season under MLB's domestic violence policy. He has not pitched since 2019.

Davis, still just 27, played 17 games for the Giants in 2019 but just nine the next two seasons. Manager Gabe Kapler repeatedly said he had "the engine" to be a good big leaguer, with plus power and speed, and the ability to move all over the outfield. But Davis struggled to make consistent contact at the plate and missed most of the 2021 season with injuries.

Davis was off to a good start in Sacramento this year, posting a .840 OPS with a couple of homers through his first 10 games, but he had been passed by several others on the depth chart. When the Giants needed a right-handed option early in the year, they called up Heliot Ramos. Last week, Luis Gonzalez joined the big league outfield

Davis was unlikely to be needed at the big league level anytime soon. Mike Yastrzemski and LaMonte Wade Jr. are due back in the next few days and the Giants will at some point take another look at Ramos. They would like to give Jason Krizan a shot, too.
