Report: Schwarber trade could be ‘in play' for Giants

With the MLB trade deadline fast approaching Friday, the Giants have been connected to a number of available players, with Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer being the headliner.

But with the San Diego Padres reportedly close to landing Scherzer, Farhan Zaidi might have his eyes on a different member of Dave Martinez's club. The New York Post's Joel Sherman reported Thursday that the Giants could be an option to acquire Kyle Schwarber.

Sherman noted that the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays also are thought to be interested in Schwarber.

Schwarber has been on the injured list since July 2 with a strained hamstring.

Prior to going on the Injured List, Schwarber was enjoying a good season at the plate. In 265 at-bats, the 28-year-old is hitting .253 with 25 home runs and 53 RBI.

The first-place Giants would love to add an outfield bat, a bullpen piece and perhaps a starter at the deadline. But Zaidi must walk the fine line between getting the Giants the pieces they need to win the World Series without gutting what is now a stacked farm system.

The Giants reportedly have shown interest in Kris Bryant, Trevor Story and Jon Gray, along with Schwarber and Scherzer.
