Déjà vu: Giants' season again ends on controversial call

Wilmer Flores

Giants fans might have been feeling some déjà vu after the controversial end of Thursday night's Game 5 of the National League Division Series. Wilmer Flores' questionable check swing will forever be remembered as one of the more frustrating ways a Giants season ever has come to an end.

It might feel like déjà vu because the 2020 season also ended on a brutal called strike three, robbing the Giants of a chance to compete in the expanded playoff field.

Fast forward 382 days, and the Giants were eliminated from the playoffs on this "swing" by Flores.

Ironically, the home plate umpire from Game 5 of the NLDS, Doug Eddings, was at second base for the Giants' regular season finale in 2020.

Similar to that finale in 2020, the Giants had chances to win Game 5 and keep it from being decided on such a controversial call. The Giants were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position on Thursday night, and 0-3 with runners in scoring position in the 2020 season finale.

All Giants fans can do now is look ahead to 2022 and hope next season ends on a lighter note.
