Raiders' Jon Gruden implies he doesn't want to be part of ‘Hard Knocks'

INDIANAPOLIS -- As much as it would seem to be the most entertaining option for the show “Hard Knocks,” coach Jon Gruden implied he does not want the Raiders to be the team that is featured.

“Appreciate Matt Patricia, my friend, offering that up to me,” Gruden said. “That beard that Patricia has, he’s going to be a star. I mean he’s going to be one of the future television stars. I’d be surprised if Monday Night Football doesn’t put him upstairs in the future.”

Patricia famously suggested that the Raiders would be the best option for the show a few weeks ago when addressing season ticket holders.

“I think Jon Gruden is an excellent choice for that show,” Patricia said. “I think the Oakland Raiders and everything they’ve got going on right now would be fantastic viewing for everybody to watch.”

The four teams that are eligible for the behind the scenes show, along with the Raiders, are the 49ers, Giants, Redskins, and Lions. They all fit the criteria of not playing in the postseason, having a first-year head coach, or appearing on the show in the last 10 years.

49ers general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan, along with Patricia, have all expressed their lack of desire to be featured on the show.

Washington coach Jay Gruden had not discussed the dubious honor of his team being on the show, but his epic rant from his time as the Bengals offensive coordinator has not been forgotten.

The elder Gruden didn't bring up his brother's appearance at all but instead, repaid the favor to Patricia.

“Patricia is going to do a great job ... on Hard Knocks.”
