Vitale explains why Warriors should draft Wiseman over Toppin

The Warriors have aced the draft process thus far in that there have been so many rumors as to which prospects they're high on, nobody has any idea what they're going to do with their No. 2 overall pick in next month's 2020 NBA Draft.

Even if we knew they were going to draft a guard or wing, that wouldn't eliminate many options. But if they happen to go with a big man at the top of the draft, it would seem likely to be one of three prospects: James Wiseman, Obi Toppin or Onyeka Okongwu.

If the choice comes down to either of those first two prospects, legendary basketball announcer and analyst Dick Vitale knows who he'd pick if he were Golden State.

"The bottom line is, [Toppin]'s got great explosiveness," Vitale told 95.7 The Game's "Damon, Ratto & Kolsky" on Tuesday. "Tremendous kid. They loved him on the campus [at Dayton], the coaches loved him, and I think he's got a great upside. I think that he'd absolutely fit in. I just think when you look at their roster, though, they need some post play, and I think if they can get a guy like Wiseman, I think he's worth a shot. I really do."

Vitale believes Edwards, not Wiseman, is the best prospect in the entire draft. But due to Edwards' youth and inexperience, he's not sure about the fit with the Warriors.

"[Edwards has] got things you cannot teach," Vitale added. "His explosiveness, his unbelievable upside is incredible. I think he maybe just turned 19, and I really believe that he's going to be special, but it's going to take time. And right now, Golden State, they're not in a position to take time.

"They want to win now. They've got to win now. They've really got a possibility of having another great year if they have a healthy [Steph] Curry and a healthy [Klay] Thompson. You've got [Draymond] Green, you've got now the kid [Andrew] Wiggins there, if Wiggins can blend in and fit in. They've got a lot of potential."

It's a bit ironic that Vitale would point to Edwards' age as a reason for why the Warriors might go in a different direction, considering he's only a few months younger than Wiseman. In fact, if the Warriors want more of a finished project, that would seem to work in Toppin's favor. Then again, perhaps they will prioritize a diaper dandy with a higher ceiling.

We don't know who the Warriors will pick on Nov. 18. In fact, we don't even know if they'll pick at all. But luckily, we won't have to wait much longer to find out.
