NBA rumors: Warriors already drawing interest from veteran free agents

With their 2019-20 season now behind them, the Warriors have turned their full attention toward getting back to championship contention next season. And, some players that might help them get there apparently already have taken notice.

While Golden State has a few potentially desirable assets to help strengthen the roster -- namely what will be a top-five pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and a $17.2 million trade exception -- they are unlikely to be enough to push the Dubs over the top. The Warriors will need to add some free agents, and given the fact that they are projected to be a tax-paying team, it certainly would benefit them if they were able to acquire some quality veterans at discounted prices.

In order to get those veterans to sign for affordable salaries, the Warriors likely will have to sell them on the benefits of joining a team led by Steve Kerr, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, it doesn't sound like that's going to be a difficult sell.

"They're going to look hard at guys like Anthony Edwards," Charania said Tuesday on Complex's "Load Management" podcast when asked what the Warriors would do with the No. 1 overall draft pick. "They're going to look hard at maybe packaging the pick. I don't think they're going to rule that out either. You're looking at a veteran team, and there's already some veteran free agents that are looking at the Warriors. They're looking at them gearing up and loading back up. You have Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green back healthy. Now you've got [Andrew] Wiggins. They need a center, they need another maybe wing or guard coming off the bench, but other than that, this team is going to be geared up and loaded to go."

The massive drop in league revenue due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is expected to create a free-agent market in which there are very few teams with ample cap space. As such, many players likely will have to settle for lower salaries than they would have signed for in a more traditional league year. Given the Warriors' finances, that arguably could work in their favor.

Kerr, Curry, Thompson and Green have never lost a playoff series in which all three players were healthy and active for its entirety. Even after a down year, it's easy to see why veterans might be interested in joining them.
