Report: Warriors stars in contact with KD following trade request

Could a reunion be in store for Kevin Durant and the Warriors? Never say never.

On Sunday, Andscape's Marc J. Spears reported, citing sources, that the Warriors have interest in trading for Durant after the superstar requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets.

The Athletic's Marcus Thompson II reported shortly thereafter that a reunion between the Warriors and Durant is "highly unlikely."

Even if the Warriors were able to trade for Durant, would his former Golden State teammates want him back?

“I mean,” one source told Thompson, “it’s freaking Kevin Durant.”

According to Thompson, some of the Warriors stars already have been in contract with Durant.

"The Warriors superstars have been in conversations with Durant," Thompson added. "In addition to catching up, the Hall of Fame-bound peers did entertain the idea of a reunion. It was mostly about the stunning nature of it even being possible. The idea of them playing together again had to seem impossible when Durant left in free agency in 2019. It isn’t lost on them how life has contrived an opportunity for them to come full circle. They see it, like everyone else, and talked about it, like everyone else."

The extent to which those conversations took place remains unclear, but it doesn't sound as if Warriors stars are pushing hard for a reunion to happen.

"This isn’t a case where the Warriors stars are pressing the front office to go acquire Durant," Thompson said. "Sources made it clear they are fine defending their title with Wiggins, Poole and the young players they’ve been grooming to win with them. But if the universe somehow sets it up so legends reunite, they’d be open to it."

It makes sense that the Warriors aren't pushing hard for a trade to happen. They don't need Durant, they've won two championships without him and they're well-equipped to do so again.

If an opportunity does fall in their lap, though, it wouldn't hurt to explore it.
