Kerr jokingly proposes NBA rule change for Christmas games

Steve Kerr loves Christmas. He likes it even more when he gets to celebrate at home with his family.

But for the second straight year, Kerr and the Warriors will play on the road on the NBA's marquee day on the schedule.

The Warriors will head to Phoenix to take on the Suns in a titanic clash on Saturday, a year after playing the Bucks in Milwaukee on Christmas.

Kerr spoke to reporters before the Warriors' game against the Memphis Grizzlies at Chase Center on Thursday, and he jokingly had a message for the NBA, though there probably was some truth in his words.

"Generally, I like playing on Christmas," Kerr said. "It's exciting. I love playing at home on Christmas. That way you can still have a good family day. Christmas morning with the kids and then go down to the arena later. It's tough being on the road for Christmas, but it's part of being in the NBA. And it is an honor to play on Christmas. It's a showcase and everybody is watching.

"I do think there should be a rule in the NBA that you can be on the road two years in a row. Just making that clear. Last year we were in Milwaukee and this year we'll be in Phoenix. That doesn't seem right. I'm confident that next year we will be at home for Christmas or we will all protest and not show up."

The Warriors have played on Christmas every year since Kerr took over as coach in 2014. Prior to this year, they had played four home game and three road games. While this will mark the first time under Kerr that they have played back-to-back road games, Golden State did get the luxury of playing three straight home games in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

With Steph Curry remaining one of the biggest draws in the NBA, it's a safe bet that the Warriors will play on Christmas during the 2022-23 season. And if Kerr gets his way, that will be a home game at Chase Center, which is quickly becoming a big home-court advantage for Golden State.
