Warriors' Steve Kerr apparently used ‘Austin Powers' alias with Bulls

In news that really only would have made sense in 1997 or 1998, it appears current Warriors coach Steve Kerr used "Austin Powers" as his alias to check into hotel rooms on road trips while playing with the Chicago Bulls.

NBC Sports Chicago's Rob Schaefer deduced Kerr's nom de plume after examining a list of road-trip room assignments that '97-98 Bulls reserve Rusty LaRue shared on Twitter. Schaefer found that the list, which wasn't presented in alphabetical order, closely corresponded with an A-Z list of Chicago's roster from that season.

"Austin Powers" was sandwiched between "Oscar Miles" -- an Illinois state Hall of Fame golfer and the likely alias of avid golfer (and Kerr puncher) Michael Jordan -- and Joe Kleine, a Bulls backup who didn't have an alias.

Kerr, of course, was listed between Jordan and Kleine on the Bulls' alphabetical roster that season.

Austin Powers was firmly in the zeitgeist at the time, as the Mike Myers-starring "International Man of Mystery" came out on May 2, 1997. The fictional British superspy appeared in two more sequels and spawned all manner of awful impressions in the coming decades, but "Austin Powers" would've been, well, a groovy alias during the Bulls' "Last Dance."

What would Kerr's alias have been during the 2019-20 season, assuming he used one? Benoit Blanc -- Daniel Craig's detective in "Knives Out" -- would be a good choice, assuming Kerr once again wanted to use a comedic character performed by an actor speaking in an accent that's not their own.

If Kerr stayed loyal to Austin Powers, here's hoping he was really committed and checked in wearing a velvet suit.
