BROOKLINE, Mass. -- It was a difficult first round of the 2022 U.S. Open for the five golfers representing the New England region at The Country Club.
Keegan Bradley fared the best of the bunch.

After throwing out the first pitch at Wednesday night's Boston Red Sox game, the Vermont native shot an even par 70. He birdied the Par-4 5th hole and bogeyed the Par-4 17th. It was a solid round overall for Bradley, who has four PGA Tour wins in his career, including a major tournament victory at the 2011 PGA Championship.
Scott Stallings finished 4-over par. The 37-year-old Worcester, Mass., native made five bogeys and one birdie on the Par-5 14th hole.
Michael Thorbjornsen was in the first grouping that teed off at 6:45 a.m. He entered the tournament as the reigning Massachusetts Amateur champion, but Thursday was a struggle for him. The 20-year-old from Wellesley, Mass., shot a 7-over par. Thorbjornsen made seven bogeys, one double-bogey and two birdies in his first round. He'll need a bounce-back performance Friday to make the cut.
Golf
Fran Quinn was in the grouping that teed off at 6:45 a.m. from the 10th hole. He finished 6-over par with eight bogeys and two birdies. The 57-year-old from Holden, Mass., also has his work cut out for him to make it to the weekend.
Caleb Manuel is another one of the amateur players in this tournament. He shot a 13-over par with bogeys on the first five holes and eight of the first 10. He also double-bogeyed the Par 3 6th hole. The Topsham, Maine, native is at the bottom of the leaderboard entering Friday's second round.
The 60 lowest scores and ties will advance to the third and fourth rounds this weekend.
