Morning Skate: On the road to Newfoundland

Share

Here are all the links from around the hockey world, and what I’m reading, while readying to take the boy to "Superhero Night" at the Pawtucket Red Sox tonight. If you see me and my 4-year-old son, who is dressed as Batman, feel free to say hello.

*Bon Voyage to FOH (Friend of Haggs) Sean Roarke, who is apparently in Newfoundland judging by the Michael Ryder road signs that he’s tweeting out.

*It looks like Shayne Gostisbehere is healthy in both mind and body, and is ready for a strong campaign with the Philadelphia Flyers.

*Dallas Stars defenseman John Klingberg is hoping that Ken Hitchcock is going to dramatically help the Stars improve defensively. Klingberg may be careful about what he wishes for given how that might impact his offensive game, but it is certainly needed in Big D.

*PHT writer Cam Tucker has Wayne Gretzky with high praise for Vegas Golden Knights GM George McPhee and his workaholic ways.

*The Wild Wild West is the appropriate goalie mask theme for new Arizona Coyotes goaltender Antti Raanta as he readies for a big season in the desert.

*The Hockey News has their Top 10 Calder Trophy candidates, and it’s no surprise that Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy comes in at No. 2 on the list. He’s a strong candidate to be rookie of the year with former BU teammate Clayton Keller as another strong Calder favorite out of Arizona. It will be fun to see how McAvoy develops in this first full season in the NHL. He’ll undoubtedly have some highs and lows as he figures things out. But the talent is there for him to be a really strong top-four D-man right off the bat. How BU didn’t win the national championship with that kind of talent on their roster last season is beyond me.

*For something completely different: Looking for a Star Wars baseball jersey and looking to give to a great cause at the same time? We bring you the Portland Sea Dogs Storm Trooper jersey with the proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
