LAS VEGAS – Former Celtics center Vitor Faverani has signed a two-year deal to play for international powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv that’s reportedly worth $600,000 Euros ($669,390) per season.
Faverani, 27, appeared in 37 games (eight starts) for the Celtics as a rookie in the 2013-2014 season. Boston sent the 6-foot-11 center back and forth between Boston and the team’s Development League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.
Faverani was a dominant force in his D-League assignments, averaging 19 points and 11 rebounds to go with three assists and 1.3 blocks per game.
His best play for the Celtics came early in his career.
In the season-opener against Toronto, Faverani scored what would be a career-high 13 points.
And the following game against Milwaukee, he had a double-double of 12 points and 18 rebounds which would also be a career-high on the boards for him.
From there, things only got worse for Faverani in terms of his play and role with the team.
A torn meniscus injury in his left knee cut his rookie season short.
He was still on the roster for the following season, but it was clear that both sides were heading their separate ways.
It became a matter of when, not if, that was going to happen.
Shortly after trading Rajon Rondo to Dallas last December, in a separate move, the Celtics waived Faverani.
Prior to signing with the Celtics, the Brazilian big man had spent eight seasons playing international basketball in Spain.
