Celtics lose almost all drawings in pre-draft lottery, Memphis lottery odds rank eighth

The pre-draft lottery drawings didn't exactly go favorably for the Boston Celtics, but they did get one small victory during the drawings. The Memphis Grizzlies have the eighth-best odds in the draft lottery. So, if things hold to form, the Celtics will not receive the Grizzlies' first-round pick in 2019, which the team would prefer.

As it stands, the Celtics have a 42.6 percent of landing the Memphis pick. Had the Grizzlies finished with the seventh-best odds in the tiebreaker, the Celtics would have had a 20.7 percent chance of receiving the pick. However, had the Grizzlies finished ninth in the tiebreaker with the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans, there would have been a 73.6 percent chance that the Celtics would have landed the pick. So, they basically split the middle on those odds.

That was the silver lining for the Celtics. They had some bad luck with their other tiebreaker picks. Most notably, the Sacramento Kings lost their tiebreaker to the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat. As a result, the Kings pick has the worst all the lottery odds. The Celtics would have had a 4.8 percent chance of getting a top-four pick no matter where that pick landed, but they could have had a chance to pick 12th or 13th if they hadn't finished last in the drawing.

Elsewhere, the Celtics owned the Clippers pick via a trade, and the Clippers were tied with the Spurs and Pacers for the 18th spot. The Clippers were drawn third in that tiebreaker, meaning the Celtics will pick 20th, the worst spot they could have gotten in that drawing.

The Celtics also lost a drawing to the Thunder to have the 21st pick. Instead, the Celtics will own the 22nd pick.
