The 27-year-old Richardson, whom the Celtics acquired from the Dallas Mavericks on July 30, had already exercised his $11.6 million player option for the upcoming season.

Originally a second-round draft choice of the Miami Heat (40th overall) in 2015, Richardson had also spent time with the Philadelphia 76ers before joining the Mavs last season. Capable of playing guard and forward, Richardson averaged a career-high 16.6 points per game for the Heat in 2018-19 and averaged 12.1 points in 59 games for Dallas last season.

Richardson is the latest Celtic to earn a contract extension this month, following deals for Marcus Smart and Robert Williams.
