Celtics Talk Podcast: Why C's should be in the NBA title conversation

Share

The Boston Celtics are on a roll lately with Jayson Tatum leading the way, but do they have enough firepower to win an NBA title?

Obviously the C's have struggled with their fair share of injuries this season, but that doesn't necessarily make them any less of a championship contender right now. If everyone is healthy come playoff time, teams around the NBA shouldn't take Boston lightly.

On this week's episode of the Celtics Talk Podcast, Marc Spears of The Undefeated joined Kyle Draper and A. Sherrod Blakely to discuss the C's chances at bringing home the title -- and Spears thinks the Celtics will put up a fight.

Oh yeah. I mean to me they're certainly a team you need to be worried about if you're anybody in the NBA. They just have so many weapons, so much height, so much length, they got size. Obviously Horford leaving -- if he was still there that would've packed it in. But, how do you guard them? How do you guard them in the playoffs when they're healthy and they've got everybody, and everybody's confident? I don't know how you do.

In a seven-game series they're going to be a tough out, a real, real tough out. Kemba [Walker] finally has something to play for in the postseason, Hayward is a continuously intriguing story in his road to getting back to an All-star level. They say to win a championship you need four All-stars. This team has four All-star caliber players.

Perhaps the depth is a little in question, but I do think in the playoffs, with the days off between games, your rotation gets a lot smaller, and so those guys are going to require more time. Smart is Smart, so he's going to be the irritant and talented player that he is. So, I wonder if they end up adding somebody from the free-agent scrap heap. I remember when I covered the Celtics in 2007-09, when they won that championship in 2008, they added guys like Cassell who was a buyout guy. They added guys like P.J. Brown. I wouldn't say they wouldn't have won it without them. They certainly played a big role in the Celtics winning their last championship, so you really haven't heard Boston's name in terms of adding anybody, but it may not hurt to add a player to the roster that's a veteran guy that perhaps can help them off the bench in the postseason.

Boston's bench has been spread rather thin lately due to the injuries sustained to Gordon Hayward, Kemba Walker, and Jaylen Brown. The injuries have caused bench players to take over as starters, thus resulting in the bench not being able to add much on the offensive side of things.

However, the Celtics can make a splash in the postseason provided they remain healthy. And if they add a veteran scorer for the bench, they'll be that much more dangerous down the stretch.
