Celtics close in on franchise record for blowout wins set by 2008 team

Seemingly every game now, the Boston Celtics of 2021-22 draw comparisons with the Celtics of 2007-08.

Wednesday's blowout victory over the Chicago Bulls brought about yet another chance to compare this year's group with the franchise's most recent champion.

Ime Udoka brings perspective on Celtics' 50th win of season

By knocking off the Bulls, 117-94, the Celtics won their 17th game of the season by 20 points or more. That's now tied for the second-most wins by at least 20 points in franchise history, behind only the 2008 team of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, which accomplished the feat 22 times.

What's been most impressive about this year's group is how many of the 20-point victories have come after its dreadful 18-21 start to the season, as just two of Boston's first 18 wins were by at least 20 points.

Since then, however, 15 of the Celtics' next 32 wins have been by at least 20 points -- in other words, nearly half of Boston's wins in the second half of the season have been of the molly-whopping variety.

With only two games left in the regular season, the Celtics won't be able to set a new franchise mark for most wins of 20 points or more. But they can at least grab sole possession of second place, and continue to show signs they have what it takes to match the 2007-08 team in the all-important category of championships won.ย
