David Andrews explains timing of announcing 2020 return on NFL Draft day

The New England Patriots were just about to begin a potentially franchise-altering draft when one of their current players broke some big news.

Patriots center David Andrews announced on the first day of the 2020 NFL Draft that he's been cleared to play in 2020 after missing the entire 2019 season due to blood clots.

Andrews admitted in an interview with Patriots.com's Megan O'Brien he received the good news from doctors "a little while" before the draft. So, why did he go public with that news Thursday?

"I just kind of got tired of hiding it and seeing people out and them asking me and me saying, 'I don't know, we'll see,' " Andrews told O'Brien. "So, just kind of got it all done so I can stop answering the questions."

Andrews also gave the Patriots and their fans some reassurance entering the draft. New England selected three offensive linemen over the weekend -- including center Dustin Woodard in the seventh round -- but the starting center job is still Andrews' to lose in 2020 if he's healthy.

The 27-year-old also stayed involved with the team last season despite being on injured reserve, joining the Patriots for meetings during the week. In fact, Andrews tried to treat the season like he was playing -- with one notable activity change on the weekends.

"I tried to prepare like I would play, and then Friday or Saturday when the team would leave or go stay at the hotel, I'd go deer hunting," Andrews said.

Andrews said he feels "great" at the moment and has been able to work out normally, so here's hoping he's taking down defensive linemen instead of deer in 2020.
