Report: 2019 NFL Draft QB prospect Will Grier visiting Patriots today

Share

One of the top quarterback prospects in the 2019 NFL Draft is visiting the New England Patriots on Wednesday, per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

As Rapoport notes, the Patriots aren't the only team hosting Grier for a visit. Teams in need of a quarterback but don't like this QB class enough to use a first round pick on one could look to Grier as a solid option on Day 2 of the draft.

Grier completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,864 yards with 34 touchdown passes and eight interceptions for the West Virginia Mountaineers last season. He earned second-team All-Big 12 honors in 2018.

The Patriots need a long-term solution at quarterback for when Tom Brady eventually retires. Backups Danny Etling and Brian Hoyer aren't likely to be the answer for that role, so selecting a quarterback early in the upcoming draft makes sense for Bill Belichick.

The Pats have six picks in the first three rounds of the 2019 draft, including two picks in the second round and three picks in the third round. The Patriots have a few more pressing needs than quarterback, but it's obviously important to have enough talent and depth at that position.

New England also could trade for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen, who could moved if the Cards take Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick.
