Rob Gronkowski's agent won't rule out a potential return sometime in 2019

Rob Gronkowski's agent won't rule out a potential return sometime in 2019

UPDATE: Rosenhaus doubled-down on his statements in an appearance on ESPN's Get Up. Per Mike Reiss, Rosenhaus said that he "wouldn't be shocked if [Gronk] came back to play a few games." Here's the full statement Rosenhaus made about Gronk's return.

--End of Update--

The New England Patriots suffered a blow to their offense on Sunday afternoon when star tight end Rob Gronkowski elected to retire. Gronk, 29, was one of the best tight ends in NFL history and one of Tom Brady's top weapons for the past decade.

While the Patriots' offense may be in a tough position without Gronk, there is a silver lining. There is a small possibility that he could return to the team.

In an interview with ProFootballTalk's Peter King, Gronkowski's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, wouldn't rule out a return at some point in 2019. Still, per King, "There's nothing to indicate a return to football now," which makes sense given that Gronkowski just announced his retirement.

It could make sense for Gronkowski to return later in the season or perhaps just for a postseason run with the Patriots. After all, he has been highly productive in the playoffs, logging 81 catches for 1,163 yards and 12 touchdowns in 14 postseason contests. And returning later in the season would keep him from taking as many hits and guarantee he would be healthy late in the year.

But without assurance from Gronkowski that he will return, the Patriots won't be able to rely on that possibility.

The Patriots are thin at tight end in the wake of Gronkowski's retirement, so expect them to address the position soon. They recently made an aggressive run at Jared Cook in free agency and have expressed interest in several of the top tight ends in the 2019 NFL Draft.

George Kittle celebrated Super Bowl berth with hilarious Jimmy Garoppolo shirt

George Kittle celebrated Super Bowl berth with hilarious Jimmy Garoppolo shirt

George Kittle had a little fun with his quarterback after the San Francisco 49ers beat the Green Bay Packers in Sunday night's NFC Championship Game to clinch a berth in Super Bowl LIV.

The All-Pro tight end showed up to his postgame press conference with a custom t-shirt that included a shirtless photo and autograph of 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Check it out in the tweet below:

Garoppolo was asked by reporters about Kittle's shirt, and he couldn't hold back his laughter.

“I got him earlier in the week with a shirt, showed it to the media and everything, so he had to get me back a little bit," a smiling Garoppolo said, per 95.7 The Game. "I thought it was a nice shirt he had on. Maybe we’ll get them in the team store soon.”

Garoppolo is no stranger to the Super Bowl. He made two Super Bowl appearances with the New England Patriots as Tom Brady's backup, and in two weeks he'll make his first start on that stage.

The 49ers quarterback hasn't had to play at an elite level for his team to reach the Super Bowl, but that should change in Miami on Feb. 2. The AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs have an offense that looks unstoppable right now, so Garoppolo likely will need to play one of his best games as a pro to give San Francisco a strong chance to win its sixth Lombardi Trophy in franchise history.

Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes ends Patriots QB Tom Brady's 2-year run atop this list

Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes ends Patriots QB Tom Brady's 2-year run atop this list

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is no longer the best-selling NFL player based on sales of all officially licensed player-identified merchandise.

Brady's two-year run atop that list has been ended by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was the best-selling player from March through November of 2019.

Here are the top 10 players in official merchandise sales, per the NFL Players' Association.

1. Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs
2. Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots
3. Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Dallas Cowboys
4. Baker Mayfield, QB, Cleveland Browns
5. Odell Beckham Jr., WR, Cleveland Browns
6. Khalil Mack, LB, Chicago Bears
7. Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers

Brady is still in second place, which is pretty remarkable when you consider how long he's been playing. He'll probably stay in the top five next season, too. The only question is which team will Brady be playing for.

Mahomes rising to the top spot is no surprise, though. The Chiefs quarterback is quickly becoming the face of the league, and that status might be cemented if he leads Kansas City to a Super Bowl LIV victory over the San Francisco 49ers in two weeks. Mahomes is only 24 years old, he won the league MVP last season and could add the Lombardi Trophy to his résumé soon. He's probably going to be the most popular and best-selling player in pro football for a long, long time.
