MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The smartest player on the Patriots roster brain-farted at a most inopportune time.

Nope, even Tom Brady’s not immune to those.

With just seconds remaining in the first half and the Patriots sniffing the Dolphins goal line, Brady took a sack on third down. The Patriots has no timeouts left and the clock ran out before the Patriots could attempt a field goal. They never even tried to run the field goal unit out.

“Terrible play by me,” Brady said. “That should never happen. I just lost track of . . . I thought we had one timeout. We called the one. We ran a couple plays. I was just not thinking on third down.”

The Patriots left at least seven points on the board against the Dolphins by botching that sequence, and Stephen Gostkowski missing an extra point and later a field goal.

Brady initially avoided the pressure he felt on that meltdown third-down play.

It looked like he was looking for Gronkowski to uncover in the end zone. Brady ducked out of one potential hit, looked up and could’ve thrown it away but he missed his opportunity. Cam Wake was on top of him, and Brady went down easily thinking the Patriots would call timeout and kick a chip-shot field goal.
