Chris Sale has had a rather forgettable start to the 2019 season. After inking a big extension just before the campaign began, Sale has stumbled out of the gate and has yet to log a win for the Red Sox.
So far, Sale has an 0-5 record with a 6.30 ERA. He has looked better in recent outings, allowing just four earned runs and striking out 18 in 12 innings of work, but he still wasn't able to avoid a dubious mark.
According to Baseball Reference, Sale's April was the worst individual month for a Red Sox pitcher since Mike Gardiner in 1992.
During his career, Gardiner logged a 17-27 record with a career ERA of 5.21. By comparison, Sale is 103-67 with a career ERA of 2.96. So, needless to say, it's odd that Sale has found himself in Gardiner's company.
On the bright side, Sale can only go up from here. Right?

Sale will look to get the month of May started right as he takes the mound for the Red Sox on Friday night. He will be squaring off against his former club, the Chicago White Sox, for just the third time in his career and second time in Chicago. In two starts against them, Sale has a 1-1 record.
