David Ortiz ‘damn interested' to find out real story behind shooting

David Ortiz seems to be recovering well after he was shot in the Dominican Republic in June.

Now, the retired Boston Red Sox slugger wants answers.

Ortiz has hired former Boston police commissioner Ed Davis to lead an investigation into the shooting that left him wounded outside a Santo Domingo bar on June 9, The Boston Globe reported Sunday.

The attack on Ortiz has led to more than 10 arrests, including the apprehension of alleged mastermind Victor Hugo Gomez in Santo Domingo.

But according to his spokesman, Joe Baerlein, Ortiz isn't satisfied with the work of Dominican and U.S. law enforcement, both of which haven't spoken to him since his first surgery in Santo Domingo shortly after the shooting.

"He’s damn interested in finding out what really happened," Baerlein told the Globe.

Dominican Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez insisted in a June press conference that Ortiz wasn't actually the intended target, calling the shooting a case of mistaken identity while backtracking from an earlier announcement that Big Papi was the target of a hit squad.

According to Baerlein, Ortiz is wary of both theories and wants Davis' team to discover the real motive behind why he was shot.

"David has been carefully monitoring the government and police investigation,’’ Baerlein told the Globe. "He had no basis for a long time to challenge their theory of mistaken identity. However, as new facts continue to come up, it lends some optimism that there may be some other conclusions that are drawn before it’s over about why David was shot."

Fortunately, the 43-year-old appears to be recovering well. Ortiz shared a rare photo of himself Sunday on Instagram moving his 18-year-old daughter, Alex, into school at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
