A "new" David Price showed up for the Red Sox in the postseason - one that could win in October and lead his team to a World Series title.
Perhaps to mark that new, post-championship beginning - or maybe it's just as a random move - Price will have a new uniform number when he reports to spring training in Fort Myers, Fla., in two weeks.
Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that Price will switch from No. 24, which he wore in his first three seasons with the Red Sox, to No. 10.
Abraham also reported he knew of no reason for the switch, but there's "zero chance" it means the Sox are retiring the number to honor one of the last players before Price to wear that number, Manny Ramirez.
Dwight Evans, who's in the Red Sox Hall of Fame, also made No. 24 famous in Boston, but the Sox have generally only retired numbers of former players who are enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
Price wore 14 at Vanderbilit and with the Rays, Tigers and Blue Jays, but that number was retired to honor Jim Rice with the Red Sox. He said at his introductory press conference that Evans had given him his blessing to wear 24, on one condition.

“He told me just to go win a World Series,” Price said at the time. “That’s what I want to do.”
With that mission accomplished, it's time for a new number.
