The Boston Red Sox are scheduled to celebrate their 2018 World Series championship with President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday, but manager Alex Cora won't be attending the ceremony.
Cora revealed his decision to a Puerto Rican newspaper Sunday, and he cited the relief efforts in his native Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria as the primary reason for his choice.
The Red Sox manager is not alone his decision to skip Thursday's event at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. David Price, Hector Velazquez, Rafael Devers, Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr. all have publicly said they will not join their teammates at the White House.
This will be the first visit to the White House for the Red Sox since President Trump took office in 2017. The team has said the visit is optional for all players, coaches and staff.
The Sox will be in the Washington D.C. area beginning Monday when they open a three-game series against the Orioles in Baltimore. Boston does not have a game scheduled for Thursday.
