Michael Chavis had no idea what to do after first Red Sox walk-off

Michael Chavis looked like a cool customer Wednesday night at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox rookie tallied the first walk-off hit of his young career, a single up the middle that lifted Boston to a 6-5 win over the Colorado Rockies. After passing first base, Chavis calmly turned, tossed his helmet and waited for his teammates' onslaught.

But the 23-year-old was anything but calm below the surface.

"I hit first base -- and I had a couple walk-offs, it's not like it's something I've never done before --  and I kind of just forgot what to do, honestly," Chavis said after the game, per NBC Sports Boston's John Tomase. "I had my helmet, I was like, 'Do I throw it, do I keep it, do I hand it to somebody?' I don't know.

"I turned, got tackled by Mookie (Betts), gave him a hug. So that was great, honestly. I'm a big hugger. I get that from my mom."

Chavis was unsure if he'd get the chance to play hero. With Xander Bogaerts on second base and nobody out, the second baseman admitted he thought the Red Sox would make him sacrifice bunt.

Why Bregman believes Roman Anthony can be a ‘superstar for a long time'

"It’s just, I don’t know who I am, dude,” Chavis said. “I’m new here. I know I can hit, I know I have power, stuff like that. But I’m hitting seventh. I don’t know if I’m hitting like Michael, or if I’m like, your seven-hole hitter."

Chavis indeed is new here; the Red Sox had just seven sacrifice hits in 2018 under new manager Alex Cora, tied for the third-fewest in baseball. And considering he's batting .296 with a .986 OPS through his first 22 MLB games, there was no way Boston was going to take the bat out of his hands.

So, next time Chavis walks the Red Sox off, he can act like he's been there before.
