Jackie Bradley Jr. will stay in the American League East after being designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox.

The Toronto Blue Jays are signing the veteran outfielder, according to Zeke Telemaco of WEEI. MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo confirmed the news on Tuesday and reported it's a major-league contract.

Bradley was released by the Red Sox last week after slashing .210/257/.321 with three homers and 29 RBI in his second stint in Boston. The 2018 World Series champion was acquired last offseason in a trade that sent outfielder Hunter Renfroe to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Toronto already has a loaded outfield with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in left, George Springer in center, and Teoscar Hernandez in right. Whit Merrifield was acquired at the trade deadline and can play all three outfield spots. Bradley likely will contribute off the bench as a defensive replacement.

The Blue Jays (60-49) currently own the top Wild Card spot while the Red Sox (54-56) sit 4.5 games out of postseason contention. The next time the two teams will face off is Aug. 23, when they begin a three-game series at Fenway Park.
