Money has been spent in massive amounts over the last few days as MLB teams rush to sign the top free agents on the market.
The Boston Red Sox have been largely absent from the free agent frenzy, with veteran starting pitcher Michael Wacha as their only notable addition so far.

SIGN UP HERE They also haven't done much to work out a new contract extension with one of their best young players: third baseman Rafael Devers.
In fact, "zero progress" has been made on that front since the 2021 season ended, per MassLive's Chris Cotillo:
Devers and the Red Sox have until the current collective bargaining agreement expires at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thursday to reach an extension. If no deal is in place before that point, both sides will need to wait until the next CBA is in place to come to an agreement.

It's important for the Red Sox to lock up Devers long term. He's established himself as one of the league's top young players at just 25 years old.
Devers hit .278 with a career-high 38 home runs in 2021, along with 113 RBI, 62 walks, 165 hits, 101 runs scored and a .352 on-base percentage.
Keeping him long-term will be expensive for the Red Sox, especially when you look at some of the crazy contracts given out in free agency so far. But paying for Devers is well worth the risk for Boston given his age and talent. Devers is able to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2023 season.
