Rafael Devers joins Ted Williams with multiple 30-home run seasons under 25

It's been some kind of night at Fenway Park.

First, Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale became just the second pitcher in MLB history to throw three immaculate innings, completing the feat in the third inning against the Minnesota Twins.

Now, it's Rafael Devers who is finding himself mentioned with an all-time great. With his two-run homer in the sixth inning, the 24-year-old Devers reached 30 home runs in a season for the second time in his career.

The only other player to hit 30 homers in a season with the Red Sox multiple times before turning 25? Ted Williams.

Rafael Devers is the 16th player to record multiple 30-HR seasons for the Red Sox, but only the 2nd to do so before turning 25 years old.

Williams did it in his age 20, 22 and 23 seasons, and may well have done it again at 24 had he not been away serving the United States in World War II.

Nevertheless, Devers has bounced back nicely from a down 2020 campaign, proving his 2019 breakout was no fluke. For the year, Devers is hitting .277 with 30 home runs, 94 runs batted in and a league-leading 34 doubles -- two years after leading the American League in the category, with 54.
