The Red Sox officially activated Andrew Cashner to the active roster Sunday after acquiring the right hander from Baltimore in exchange for two minor leaguers on Saturday.
Cashner is expected to make his first start on Tuesday against the Blue Jays and will wear No. 48, most recently occupied by the infamous Pablo Sandoval.
In 17 starts this season for the Orioles, Cashner posted a 9-3 record, 3.83 ERA and 66 strikeouts. This comes off a horrific 2018 campaign where he went 4-15 with a 5.29 ERA.
With Nathan Eovaldi expected to return as the full-time closer for Boston, Cashner should be able to fill a hole in the starting rotation. It also doesn't hurt that he's a righty given the presence of Chris Sale, David Price and Eduardo Rodriguez in the rotation.
Steven Wright was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a toe injury, so Dave Dombrowski might have to make another move or two to bolster one of the worst bullpens in the league.
