The Red Sox began their four-game series vs. the Yankees with a statement.
Boston batted around and plated seven runs against New York starter Masahiro Tanaka in the first inning. The onslaught began with a Mookie Betts single to start the game, a Rafael Devers walk, and then a three-run moonshot off the bat of Xander Bogaerts to plate the first three runs.
Following singles from Andrew Benintendi, Brock Holt, and Mitch Moreland, the bases were juiced for Jackie Bradley Jr. The Red Sox center fielder drilled a two-run double, then Betts did the same to make it 7-0.
The last time the Sox exploded in the first inning like this against the Yankees was in 1989, when they scored eight runs in a 9-5 victory.
This marks the second time in the last week the Red Sox have tallied seven runs in an inning. They also accomplished the feat in Monday's win over the Rays.
