As a scout for a professional baseball team, your resume is spearheaded by the big-name players you've been instrumental in scouting, drafting, and signing.

When your resume says "Mike Trout," well, safe to say ears will perk up.

The Red Sox hired Greg Morhardt, the former Los Angeles Angels scout responsible for leading the charge to draft Trout, the consensus best player in baseball. Morhardt identified Trout as having the potential to be a Mickey Mantle-type player, and he certainly nailed that take.

Morhardt will take over as the Canada scout for the Sox.

The Red Sox farm system is currently is a state of disarray. Both trades and graduations have thinned Boston's farm over the last three seasons. Most power rankings have the Sox somewhere in the lower third, even bottom five, in the league in terms of farm system strength.

MORE RED SOX

Boston sent SP Michael Kopech (currently 19th on MLB.com's Top 100 prospects) and 2B Yoan Moncada (17 HR last season) to the White Sox in the Chris Sale trade. In the deal that sent Travis Shaw to Milwaukee for Tyler Thornburg, the Red Sox also traded infielder Mauricio Dubon, who is currently a Top 10 prospect in the Brewers organization.

Over the last couple seasons, the debuts of Andrew Benintendi, Blake Swihart, Sam Travis, and Bobby Poyner have thinned out Boston's farm.

Third baseman Michael Chavis is Boston's only Top 100 prospect according to MLB.com. He ranks 69th. Unless Chavis changes positions, it's hard to imagine the 23-year-old having a future with the Sox. 22-year-old Rafael Devers seems to be the future at the hot corner.

At just 18 years old, 2018 first round pick 1B/3B Tristan Casas is the eighth-ranked first base prospect, according to MLB.com. But his ETA is not in the near future.

Pitchers Tanner Houck (2017 first round pick), Jay Groome (2016 first round pick), and Bryan Mata (international signing) represent Boston's future on the mound.

With Xander Bogaerts, Chris Sale, and Jackie Bradley Jr. all set to hit free agency in the next year or two, a depleted bullpen, and deficiencies behind the plate, the Sox are keeping one eye on the future. Greg Morhardt will certainly help.
