Red Sox select middle infielder Cameron Cannon with 43rd overall pick

With the 43rd pick of the 2019 MLB Draft, the Boston Red Sox select infield prospect, Cameron Cannon. This was the Red Sox' first pick of the three-day event.

Cannon, viewed as a middle infielder, played college baseball for the Arizona Wildcats. In 2019, he hit .397 with 29 doubles and 8 home runs.

MLB.com had Cannon ranked as the 79th overall prospect in the draft. Here's what they had to say about the Red Sox' newest member.

Cannon's best attribute is his ability to make repeated line-drive contact from the right side of the plate. He controls the strike zone well and has grown into some gap power, ranking among the NCAA Division I leaders in doubles this spring. He's an average runner out of the batter's box and a little quicker once he gets going, though he's not much of a base stealer.

Cannon could end up playing shortstop or second base for the Red Sox and will provide organizational depth at the position. For a team that has cycled through many second basemen this year, adding depth there is a sensible move.

The Red Sox also have had success taking an Arizona-based middle infield prospect in the second round of the draft. Dustin Pedroia, an Arizona State Sun Devil was their pick at that juncture in 2004.

Last year, the Red Sox took high school infield prospect, Triston Casas with their first overall pick which came midway through the first round. Casas, 19, is hitting .260 in Single-A Greenville and has already mashed 10 homers for the team.
