Red Sox' Steven Wright won't need Tommy John surgery

A trip to see Dr. James Andrews doesn't tend to bode well for pitchers, but Steven Wright received some good news regarding his right elbow during his visit.

Dr. Andrews informed the Red Sox knuckleballer he will not need Tommy John surgery as was originally feared. Instead, manager Alex Cora said in Wednesday's pregame press conference Wright received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection. The 34-year-old will rest for six weeks before paying another visit to Dr. Andrews, per WEEI's Rob Bradford.

"Hopefully he can bounce back sooner rather than later and see where it takes us if he can come back this year,” said Cora. “I’m not sure if it’s the outside or inside of the elbow. We’ll get more details later on.”

It's been an injury-riddled last couple of seasons for Wright, who has undergone multiple knee surgeries and has been on the injured list since July after being hit in the foot with a line-drive.

Wright was suspended for the first 80 games of the 2019 season after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The right-hander has pitched only 6 1/3 innings this year, posting an 8.53 ERA and 2.37 WHIP in six appearances.
