Second overall pick Bobby Witt Jr. has fandom for both Yankees and Red Sox

Everyone has different rules for which teams they choose to root for, but Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is one of those things where you have to pick a side.

The Royals used the second overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft Monday on Texas high school shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and in a video from MLB Network profiling the young star, it became apparent that he has allegiances to both the Red Sox and Yankees.

Witt Jr. referenced Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia as his favorite player after showing off a signed picture hanging on his wall, but then called a signed jersey of Derek Jeter his most memorable prize, saying the retired Yankee shortstop was also his favorite player. Witt Jr. also noted that he wears No. 17 because it is a combination of No. 15 and No. 2, which are Pedroia and Jeter's respective jersey numbers.

While favoring players on two different teams isn't usually a problem, it's difficult to separate Jeter and Pedroia from the Red Sox and Yankees. Both players embody what playing for each of those teams means. Witt Jr. would have some explaining to do if he was drafted by the Yankees or Red Sox.

Once he makes it to the big-league level, he'll have plenty of opportunities to face off with each of them in the American League.
