Mind-blowing stat about Josh McCown and the McCourty twins

Josh McCown called it a career on Monday. The long-time backup and spot starter had a 17-year career in the NFL and players from across the league took time to praise him following his announcement.

Two of those players were the McCourty twins. Devin and Jason McCourty congratulated McCown on Twitter, and it prompted a pretty funny response from McCown which also saw him drop a mind-blowing stat as well.

This comment is comical, but the real question after seeing this is, do the stats back this up? Is McCown actually the only player to ever throw interceptions to the McCourty twins in consecutive weeks?

Well, apparently, he is.

According to Pats Pulpit's Oliver Thomas, McCown was one of just seven quarterbacks to be picked by both of the McCourty twins, and he is the only one who had it happen by each in consecutive weeks.

While Thomas' data didn't include the 2018 season, no quarterback was added to the list last year. The twins each had one pick last year and while both picks came against the Buffalo Bills, they came against two different quarterbacks (Devin off Derek Anderson in Week 8, Jason off Josh Allen in Week 16).

McCown did have 82 career interceptions, so it's not necessarily a surprise that both of the McCourtys have one. But the fact that it happened by each brother in consecutive weeks is crazy.

In Sunday's Patriots-Jets game, Tom Brady vs. Josh McCown will be second-oldest starting QB matchup since merger

FOXBORO -- With Sam Darnold ruled out because of a foot injury and Josh McCown in for Sunday's game with the Patriots, this will be a long way from whatever passing-of-the-torch AFC East quarterback matchup Jets fans hoped it would be before the season

Instead, when McCown and Brady take the field at MetLife Stadium, it will be a battle of elderly (by NFL standards) passers. But the Jets obviously won't take Brady lightly. And the same is true for the Patriots and McCown, despite the fact that McCown only completed 50 percent of his passes for 135 yards, no touchdowns and two picks in his only start this season -- a Week 10 shellacking at the hands of the Bills, 41-10.

"Yeah, but most recently against us down there and he played well," Bill Belichick said Friday. "He can throw, can run. Obviously a smart guy. He has a lot of responsibility at the line of scrimmage to make coverage or protection adjustments or check plays. I wouldn’t say it’s a huge part of their offense, but they do do it.

"I’m sure he would do a good job of whatever they asked him to do. I thought he played well against us in the first game. Threw for -- I don’t know, 350 yards -- whatever it was, and moved the ball."

McCown, 39, threw for 354 yards, two touchdowns and two picks in a 24-17 loss to the Patriots last October. He also ran three times for 21 yards, including scampers on third-and-eight and third-and-two to convert first downs.

"I would say there are guys that scramble more than him," Belichick said. "Certainly some that scramble less. He’s athletic. He can do bootlegs and roll-outs, things like that."

McCown and Brady will be the second-oldest pair of starting quarterbacks in a game since the 1970 merger (80 years, 258 days combined), according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Only Vinny Testaverde (44) and Brett Favre (38) were older when they played against one another in 2007 (82 years, 44 days).

"Our careers, other than age, there's probably not a lot of similarities," McCown said, per ESPN's Rich Cimini. "But I can respect what he's gone through year in and year out to get himself ready to play. Physically, mentally, and then the focus is takes to do that, is remarkable."

Brady is dealing with a knee injury he suffered in Tennessee but is expected to play Sunday. He was scheduled to meet with reporters on Friday but was not spotted at the start of practice and then the club canceled his press conference.

Report: Jets will be without QB Sam Darnold vs. Patriots

Report: Jets will be without QB Sam Darnold vs. Patriots

It appears the Patriots won't be facing Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold at the Meadowlands on Sunday.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that Darnold, who has a foot injury, won't start.

Darnold, the No. 3 overall pick from USC, reportedly dressed for practice but didn't participate in any drills on Thursday. He hasn't practiced since Nov. 3.

Last season, McCown, 39, threw for 354 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-17 loss to the Patriots in September at MetLife Stadium but was injured and missed their second meeting in the season finale in Foxboro.

UPDATE: Friday, Nov. 23, 8:45 a.m. ET: NFL Media's Ian Rapoport is also reporting that Darnold likely will be sidelined Sunday.
