MESA, Ariz. — Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner was scratched from Sunday’s lineup just before game time because of lower back tightness.

Early indications from the club suggest the injury isn’t serious, and Hoerner’s status is to be evaluated day-to-day.

Hoerner, a Gold Glove finalist at second base last season, is locked is battling this spring to try to earn the everyday job at second, in a roster-decision mix that includes at least four infielders for two spots.

Hoerner is 9-for-18 this spring with two walks, a homer and three doubles.

He was in the lineup as the designated hitter Sunday against the Angels. Minor-leaguer Nick Martini took his place in the lineup.
