Third baseman Kris Bryant was feeling better Wednesday, Cubs manager David Ross said, but didn't start against the Mets due to a bruised right thumb.
Bryant exited Tuesday's game after getting hit in the hand by a Taijuan Walker sinker in the first inning. He stayed in defensively in the bottom half of the inning before exiting, later undergoing x-rays that came back negative.
Whether Bryant returns to the lineup Thursday could depend on how the injury responds to the pregame activities the 29-year-old was scheduled for on Wednesday.

"Just feels like the spot where he got hit has kind of a bruise feeling," Ross said. "He’ll test it out swinging the bat here a little bit in the cage.
"[He's] day to day I would say."
Bryant is in the midst of a resurgent, All-Star caliber season for the Cubs, holding a .292/.374/.544 slash line with 13 home runs and 39 RBIs in 62 games.
