The Cubs lost another player to the injured list Tuesday in infielder Matt Duffy, whom they played on the IL with a low back strain. The move is retroactive to May 23.

In a corresponding move, the club recalled infielder Patrick Wisdom from Triple-A Iowa, designating injured reliever Jason Adam for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Cubs manager David Ross said Sunday Duffy, 30, has been dealing with low back tightness lately. He made his first start in four days on Saturday, exiting when David Bote pinch hit for him in the seventh inning.

Duffy has emerged as a key contributor over the past month, batting .278/.377/.356 in 38 games overall. Since he became a regular lineup fixture in late April, the Cubs offense has been one of the most productive in the game, following a rough start.

The Cubs originally signed Wisdom, 29, last August and he registered two at-bats. They re-signed him on a minor-league deal in January.

Wisdom, a corner infielder with outfield experience, is 4-for-25 (.160) in eight games with Iowa. He's 4-for-11 with three home runs his past four games.

Adam recently underwent surgery after dislocating his left ankle with Iowa. He posted an 8.22 ERA in nine appearances with the Cubs this season.

Duffy joins Jake Marisnick, Jason Heyward, Justin Steele and Alec Mills in recently going on the IL. Ross said Tuesday the former three, each dealing with hamstring strains, are "progressing well" as they build up strength.

Mills will make a second rehab start with Iowa on Friday.
