Pedro Strop pulls right hamstring, status for Opening Day in question

Pedro Strop's status for Opening Day is in question.

According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, Strop felt a pull in his hamstring Saturday against the Angels. An MRI revealed that the right-hander suffered a mild right hamstring strain.

As Rogers notes, the Cubs believe the injury is minor and that Strop will be ready for Opening Day. However, the injury surely is still concerning for multiple reasons.

Cubs closer Brandon Morrow will be out all of April, at the least, as he recovers from offseason elbow surgery. Strop is expected to receive majority of the team's closing opportunities in Morrow's absence, though Carl Edwards Jr. and Steve Cishek could also receive some opportunities.

Furthermore, Strop infamously strained his left hamstring last September running out a ground ball against the Nationals. While the Cubs said his current strain is minor, Strop uses his right hamstring to push off the mound each pitch.

Strop will continue throwing, though he will not work off of a mound for a few weeks, according to The Athletic's Patrick Mooney.

While Cubs manager Joe Maddon said the injury doesn't look bad, he acknowledged the team doesn't want to mess with it.
