White Sox

White Sox

After the news broke that the baseball season was being suspended in March because of the coronavirus, and there was so much unknown about the present and future, I was looking for something that would make me feel better.

So, I texted White Sox play by play announcer Jason Benetti.

“Want to do a podcast with me?”

He texted back saying, “Let me check my schedule. Yep. Wide open.”

Jason and I did several podcasts together in March. It was frankly therapeutic for both of us. Maybe it was the same for White Sox fans who probably wanted some normalcy in their lives. I know I did.

So, we hit record and just talked. We talked about heavy stuff, like trying to find our way in the very beginning of this unprecedented time. We spoke about random things, like our go-to pizza place, our favorite sports movies, a fact no one knew about Jason, a dream I had about Hawk Harrelson, etc. In one podcast, we even reached out to Bob Comstock, our former broadcasting teacher at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, to talk about old times and how our sportscasting careers began.

Anything but the virus.

Six weeks later, it felt like a good time to reconnect with Jason to discuss how we’re feeling as we’re a little further down the road, how we’ve been navigating our way through the pandemic with the hopes that baseball season will return this summer.

We also talked about how technology is helping to keep us all connected during a time when the virus has kept us apart. From the direct messages Jason has received from White Sox fans that he reads back every night on Twitter to organist Nancy Faust bringing joy and nostalgia to the world with her musical tweets, we are finding ways to remain linked to one another despite the distance between us.

And then there’s the White Sox sim season that Jason and I have been broadcasting on MLB the Show. The White Sox record hasn’t been the greatest, but we’ve had a blast doing the games, and there are some surprises ahead.

Stay tuned.
