Listen to Harry Caray interview Ed Farmer in 1981

Before Ed Farmer was one of the legendary voices of White Sox baseball, he was interviewed by another.

Farmer pitched for the White Sox from 1979 to 1981, establishing himself as one of the best relief arms in franchise history, a status he holds to this day.

Farmer died on Wednesday at age 70. To remember his playing career, and perhaps the very start of his career as an on-air voice, listen to this interview that former White Sox broadcaster Harry Caray did with Farmer the pitcher back in 1981.

A year earlier, Farmer made the American League All-Star team and recorded the first 30-save season in team history.

And so Caray started off his interview like this: "Ed Farmer, tell me, how did you become the best relief pitcher in the American League?"

In the interview, Caray asked Farmer who he considered the best hitters in the AL at the time. Farmer answered Fred Lynn, George Brett and Reggie Jackson.

Those legends' numbers against Farmer?

Lynn: 2-for-7 with a double and a strikeout

Brett: 2-for-7 with a walk

Jackson: 2-for-10 with a home run, three RBIs, three walks and four strikeouts
