One of Tony La Russa's former players is reportedly joining his coaching staff on the South Side.

The White Sox haven't announced any members of La Russa's staff yet, but The Athletic's Lindsey Adler reported Wednesday night that Miguel Cairo will be the team's new bench coach, taking over the spot Joe McEwing held for four years under Rick Renteria.

Cairo, who spent 17 seasons as a major league infielder from 1996 to 2012, had two stints as a player under La Russa with the St. Louis Cardinals, the first from 2001 to 2003 and the second in 2007. Cairo spent parts of two seasons playing for the Cubs on the North Side.

Cairo most recently worked as a minor league infield coordinator with the New York Yankees.

Cairo is the latest to be reported as joining La Russa's staff, following Ethan Katz, who was reported to be the team's new pitching coach last week.
