Lucas Giolito exits Opening Day start early, with injury

The injury bug has bitten the White Sox again. After pitching four scoreless innings to begin Opening Day, Lucas Giolito’s start was cut short with “abdominal tightness.” The team says Giolito is undergoing further evaluation, and the extent of his injury is not yet known.

The White Sox are already without starting pitcher Lance Lynn, who will be sidelined for a month or two with a knee injury. They’re also without relief pitchers Ryan Burr and Joe Kelly. Garrett Crochet underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery, as well. Third baseman Yoan Moncada will also miss around three weeks with an oblique strain.

Before leaving with the injury, Giolito had given up no runs on one hit and two walks in four innings. He also struck out six batters.
