Giolito on Sox future: ‘I don't want to play anywhere else'

Lucas Giolito isn't going anywhere anytime soon, don't worry.

But he's set to hit free agency after the 2023 season, and with the prevalence of long-term contract extensions handed out to the White Sox young stars, folks are wondering if the ace of the South Side staff will be next.

The White Sox locked up Yoán Moncada, Eloy Jiménez and Luis Robert, that trio under team control through 2025, 2026 and 2027, respectively. And those deals have been important to the long-term strength of the franchise as a whole, seemingly allowing the team's contention window to stay open deep into the decade.

It was reported during the spring that the White Sox "have been engaging" both Giolito and Andrew Vaughn about getting long-term deals done.

As for the ace? He was asked on the eve of his second consecutive Opening Day start whether he wants to stay on the South Side for the remainder of his career.

"I love this organization," he said Wednesday night. "I don’t want to play anywhere else. And I’m looking forward to hopefully having a really, really good season this year."

That's got to be music to White Sox fans' ears.

Certainly, Giolito is happy to be where he is at the moment. He's been through the tough years of the White Sox rebuilding project, and he's been as vocal as anyone on the roster about what the team is capable of this season.

The White Sox have arrived at the point the rebuild was building toward, and Giolito said he and his teammates know it.

"I can sense that a little bit," he said. "A lot of us younger guys really coming into our own, we've made some big strides, especially over the last couple years. I think for us, kind of culminating that (rebuilding) era and moving into a new era of hopefully a lot of winning on the South Side."

If he gets his wish — and White Sox fans get theirs — Giolito will be a part of that winning for the next three seasons and well beyond.
