Rain halts Velasquez-Trout epic battle in funny moment

Why let a little rain interrupt an epic battle at the plate?

That appeared to be the sentiment Angels superstar Mike Trout and White Sox starter Vince Velasquez shared Saturday at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Trout stepped to the plate in the sixth inning amid a downpour on the South Side. He fouled off five straight pitches before taking back-to-back balls to draw the count even at 2-2.

As Velasquez got ready for the ninth pitch of the plate appearance, home plate umpire Larry Vanover stopped the game, putting it in a rain delay mid-plate appearance.

Except, Trout and Velasquez wanted to keep things going. The two didn't move from their respective positions — in the batter's box and on the mound — and shared a laugh.

"I wanted to get that last throw in there,” Velasquez said. “That's just how the competitive nature takes over and how much I wanted to at least finish that inning out."

Velasquez' day was finished because of the hour-long, so, unfortunately, we never will know how this clash would have ended.
