Eagles at Jets live: Highlights, analysis from NFL preseason game

Share

9:42 p.m.: This game is winding down. Thanks for following along this preseason. If you’re reading this, you’re a die-hard and I appreciate it.

A real game is coming soon enough. Promise.

9:33 p.m.: We’ve talked about Jake Elliott missing two field goals this preseason, but the Eagles are in a much better spot at that position than some other teams, the Jets included. Jets kicker Taylor Bertolet is 2 for 5 tonight.

9:26 p.m.: Thorson has had a rough night, which should make it easier to get him through waivers and to the practice squad. He is playing with a makeshift OL, but he was probably hoping for a better showing.

9:06 p.m.: Pretty impressive catch from Alex Ellis as the third quarter winds down. He nearly snagged it with one hand but instead dropped it to himself and caught it on the ground. He’s not making this team, but he’s had quiet a few weeks here. Perhaps they keep him around on the practice squad and keep developing him.

8:45 p.m.: Aziz Shittu just got carted into the locker room after a brief stay in the blue popup tent. Shittu has been around for a while on and off and wasn’t in position to make the roster. He is being evaluated for a concussion.

8:21 p.m.: That was not exactly an exciting half of football. The Jets are up 3-0.

It’s been a shaky performance for Clayton Thorson (7/13, 42 yards, 1 INT) which is good and bad news. The bad news is that the Eagles’ fifth-round pick isn’t playing well. The good news is that it’ll be easy to get him through waivers to the practice squad.

8:07 p.m.: Daeshon Hall just crushed the Jets’ QB and picked up his third strip sack of the preseason. If he doesn’t make this team, just cancel the preseason. Forget make the team at this point, he should be the fourth DE and should have a role this season.

7:59 p.m.: UDFA linebacker T.J. Edwards already has a few tackles tonight. He’s my surprise pick to make this team after coming on very strong the last few games. If you want, check out my Surviving Camp series with Edwards here.

7:40 p.m.: Clayton Thorson showed some good pocket movement but was picked off early in the second quarter. So far, he’s 4 for 7 for 25 yards. He’s expected to play a lot tonight, so we’ll get a chance to see much more from him.

7:22 p.m.: Daeshon Hall looked to be in pain as he left the field after a first quarter drive. He had been dealing with a shoulder injury, so maybe that flared up again. He went to the sideline and then to the popup blue tent.

7:10 p.m.: A bit of good news as Dave Spadaro announced on the game broadcast that DeSean Jackson will play in the opener.

Meanwhile, here’s the Eagles’ starting OL tonight to protect starter Clayton Thorson: Matt Pryor, Sua Opeta, Nate Herbig, Keegan Render, Brett Toth

7:06 p.m.: The Eagles’ three captains for the coin toss were Cameron Johnson, T.J. Edwards and Greg Ward. Those last two are fighting for a roster spot tonight.

6:04 p.m.: Jets general manager Joe Douglas is catching up with a few old friends.

5:46 p.m.: Some of the Eagles' stars are out on the field signing autographs for fans.

5:41 p.m.: We'll see a lot of rookie Clayton Thorson tonight.

5 p.m.: Fletcher Cox went through a pretty good workout on the field before this game. He’s still recovering from an offseason surgery. Doug Pederson has said he’s confident Cox will be ready for Week 1, but Cox declined to speak to reporters on Tuesday.

4:26 p.m.: I have arrived to MetLife Stadium and there are a bunch of Eagles who won’t play tonight.

Here’s the full list: Carson Wentz, Nate Sudfeld, Josh McCown, Zach Brown, L.J. Fort, Avonte Maddox, Ronald Darby, Rasul Douglas, Orlando Scandrick, Corey Clement, Jordan Howard, Andrew Sendejo, Sidney Jones, Malcolm Jenkins, Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor, Dallas Goedert, Miles Sanders, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Zach Ertz, DeSean Jackson, Darren Sproles, Lane Johnson, Brandon Brooks, Isaac Seumalo, Jason Peters, Tim Jernigan, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Derek Barnett, Vinny Curry, Andre Dillard, Brandon Graham, Rodney McLeod, Malik Jackson, Nate Gerry, Johnathan Cyprien

The most interesting names above are probably Fort and Scandrick. I’m not sure that means they’ve definitely made the team. The Eagles should know what they have in both of them.

And you’ll notice that McCown is on the list, so get ready for a lot of Cody Kessler and Clayton Thorson.
