Eagles will reportedly interview another top defensive candidate

The Eagles have requested and been granted permission to interview Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley for their head coaching vacancy, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Now the Eagles just have to wait.

Staley’s Rams face the Packers on Saturday in the divisional round. So if the Rams lose, the Eagles will be able to conduct that interview soon. The Texans have also requested permission to interview Staley.

According to the report, the Eagles like Staley’s reputation he’s built in Los Angeles as well as what he learned from Vic Fangio.

The Rams had the NFL’s No. 1 defensive in points allowed and yards allowed in 2020.

Staley, 38, has been with the Rams just one season. Before that he was the outside linebackers coach for a year in Denver and held the same position with the Bears from 2017-18, also under Fangio.

Eagles owner Jeff Lurie on Monday said he would interview offensive and defensive coaches. While Lurie certainly leans offensive, he acknowledged that a defensive-leaning head coach can still end up with a good offense.

“You brought up offense,” Lurie said. “I think there's a couple ways to skin that cat. You can hire somebody really steeped in offense or you've seen great offenses coached by head coaches coming from the defensive side. I don't think there's any predilection for one over the other, but I do think somebody that is constantly curious of where the league is headed and what you need to do to have really good units and again, without a really good elite offense, I tend to err on that side. But not that side of the ball for head coach. Doesn't matter.”

If Staley interviews, he’ll be one of several defensive-minded candidates to interview, along with Robert Saleh and Jerod Mayo.
