Flyers' defensive prospect has shoulder surgery, won't play for Phantoms in playoffs

A month ago, Egor Zamula was expressing his excitement for the Calder Cup Playoffs.

"It's my dream," the prospect said March 20 after practice at Flyers Training Center. "I've never played in the playoffs in my pro career. ... It's a good experience for me. I want to play in the playoffs, for sure, because I think it's a great experience for everybody to play for each other."

Unfortunately for Zamula, he won't get that chance to play postseason hockey this spring. The 23-year-old defenseman underwent surgery on his left shoulder 10 days ago and will miss the remainder of AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley's playoff run.

Zamula is expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of Flyers training camp during September.

In 14 games with the big club this season, Zamula recorded four assists, 13 blocked shots and 13:23 minutes per game. He saw a three-game audition during March, which was highlighted by a strong performance in the Flyers' 6-3 win over the Panthers.

The undrafted product finished his Phantoms season with one goal, 18 assists and a minus-4 rating over 44 games.

Lehigh Valley, led by head coach Ian Laperriere, holds a 1-0 lead in its best-of-three first-round series against the Charlotte Checkers. Game 2 is Thursday at 7 p.m. ET. Game 3, if needed, is Friday at 7 p.m. ET. All three games are in Charlotte, North Carolina.
