Sherman's 2016 NFL mock draft 1.0: Eagles get Paxton Lynch

Share

With the NFL season over, we provide — what else? — a mock draft. Here's our second mock of the offseason. Paul Hudrick had the Eagles' going wide receiver in his first. Jared Sherman has them going a different direction. The draft takes place April 28-30 in Chicago.

1. Tennesee Titans - Laremy Tunsil, OT, Mississippi
With their franchise QB in place, the Titans select a bookend OT to pair with Taylor Lewan.

2. Cleveland Browns - Jared Goff, QB, California
The Browns might finally hit the jackpot with Goff, the most NFL-ready QB in his class.

3. San Diego Chargers - Jalen Ramsey, CB, Florida State
Starting safety Eric Weddle is a free agent, and Ramsey is versatile enough to play both CB and S.

4. Dallas Cowboys - Joey Bosa, DE, Ohio State
Jerry Jones will do a little dance if Bosa falls to him at No. 4. The best all-around lineman in the draft.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars - Vernon Hargreaves, CB, Florida
While a pass rusher is their top need, their secondary could use a boost like Hargreaves. Could be a shutdown corner in a year or two.

6. Baltimore Ravens - Laquon Treadwell, WR, Mississippi
The Ravens can't count on 36-year-old Steve Smith or last season's No. 1 pick Breshad Perriman to make big contributions in 2016. Treadwell is easily the top pass catcher in the draft, and has the look of a No. 1 WR.

7. San Francisco 49ers - DeForest Buckner, DE, Oregon
No, this pick isn't because Buckner is an Oregon Duck. The Niners are razor-thin on the defensive line, and Buckner is a huge (6-7/290), athletic, scheme-versatile defensive lineman who can help get this franchise pointed in the right direction.

8. Miami Dolphins - Myles Jack, OLB, UCLA
Jack is perhaps the best athlete in the class and was named both the Pac-12 Offensive and Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2013 when he played both LB and RB. He's coming off a season-ending knee injury, but he's been recovering since September, so he should be ready to roll for 2016.

9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame
Like the Titans, the Bucs need to protect their new franchise QB. Stanley is big (6-6/315) and nimble, and he will be an upgrade over Gosder Cherilus.

10. New York Giants - A'Shawn Robinson, DT, Alabama
The Giants could be losing DTs Cullen Jenkins, Markus Kuhn, and Barry Cofield to free agency. Robinson is a massive (6-3/312) who can really control the interior of the line while still being able to collapse the pocket.

11. Chicago Bears - Mackensie Alexander, CB, Clemson
Maybe a bit of a stretch here, but the Bears desperately need help at corner. Alexander is a true man-to-man cover corner who plays physically and instinctively.

12. New Orleans Saints - Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson
Lawson led the nation with 23.5 tackles for loss in 2015. The Clemson star is strong against the run and uses his strength effectively as a pass rusher (10.5 sacks in 2015).

13. Philadelphia Eagles - Paxton Lynch, QB, Memphis
Michigan State OT Jack Conklin is tempting here (and safe), but with no QB solution on the horizon, Lynch's physical and mental tools are too good to pass on. He has the size (6-6/230), arm strength, accuracy (much better than Carson Wentz) and sneaky athleticism (watch how much Memphis had him moving) that give me faith that he can be a tremendous NFL QB.

14. Oakland Raiders - Reggie Ragland, LB, Alabama
Ragland is the next in a long line of stud LBs coming from Tuscaloosa. A leader and sideline-to-sideline tackler, Ragland will be a star.

15. Los Angeles Rams - Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State
It's obvious that Nick Foles is not the long-term answer in Los Angeles. Wentz is the current darling of the draft and certainly offers a lot of intriguing tools. Coming from North Dakota State, he's going to have to adjust to the speed of the game and improve his accuracy.

16. Detroit Lions - Jack Conklin, OT, Michigan State
The Lions have Riley Reiff at LT already but need to find a bookend. Conklin isn't a sexy pick, but he's solid in all aspects of the game. He also brings a nasty demeanor to the field.

17. Atlanta Falcons - Noah Spence, LB, Eastern Kentucky
The former Ohio State Buckeye (left the program because of drug issues) reemerged at Eastern Kentucky and could be the top outside pass rusher in the draft — something the Falcons badly need.

18. Indianapolis Colts - Cody Whitehair, OG, Kansas State
The Colts' offensive line has been a mess for the past several seasons. Whitehair is the best interior lineman in the draft.

19. Buffalo Bills - Jaylon Smith, OLB, Notre Dame
A risky pick because of Smith's late-season knee injury, but the Bills roll the dice on a player, that when healthy, would have been a top-10 pick.

20. New York Jets - Robert Nkemdiche, DL, Mississippi
With Muhammad Wilkerson a free agent, the Jets reload with Nkemdiche. The former top college recruit in the nation can play outside at DE, or slide inside and play tackle. Nkemdiche's Sugar Bowl suspension (marijuana) is worrisome.

21. Washington Redskins - Andrew Billings, DT, Baylor
The Skins may lose Terrance Knighton in the middle of their improved defense. Billings is a tank in the middle of the line and has the strength to occupy two blockers.

22. Houston Texans - Ezekial Elliott, RB, Ohio State
While the Texans are probably hoping either Wentz or Lynch fall to them, Elliott would give whoever QBs for them a big boost.

23. Minnesota Vikings - Darron Lee, LB, Ohio State
Star LB Chad Greenway is a free agent, and there's little depth behind him. Lee isn't the biggest guy (6-1/235) but has tremendous speed and natural coverage skills.

24. Cincinnati Bengals - Corey Coleman, WR, Baylor
The Bengals will have WRs Mohammed Sanu and Marvin Jones hitting the free-agent market. Coleman is a dynamic deep threat with the speed to take the top off of defenses.

25. Pittsburgh Steelers - Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State
Long-time starter William Gay is a free agent, and even with him the Steelers' secondary was awful. Apple is big (6-1/200) and physical, and while he gets a little handsy at times, he'll be able to compete athletically right away.

26. Seattle Seahawks - Jarran Reed, DL, Alabama
The Seahawks may have some depth issues at DT if Brandon Mebane and Ahtyba Rubin depart as free agents. Reed is a versatile lineman who reminds me of Bennie Logan.

27. Green Bay Packers - Kenny Clark, DT, UCLA
Clark would provide a run-stuffing presence on the Packers' line. With B.J. Raji hitting free agency, the Pack could use a stout defender like Clark playing next to Mike Daniels.

28. Kansas City Chiefs - Jason Spriggs, OT, Indiana
Andy Reid continues to bolster an improving offensive line with Spriggs, who can bump Eric Fisher over to the right side of the line.

29. Arizona Cardinals - Taylor Decker, OL, Ohio State
Decker gives the Cardinals a versatile lineman who could replace free agents Bobby Massie at RT or slide inside to replace Ted Larsen at OG.

32. Carolina Panthers - Vonn Bell, S, Ohio State
Not sure the Panthers want to continue betting on guys like Kurt Coleman to have career years, so drafting a solid backend safety like Bell makes a lot of sense.

31. Denver Broncos - Kevin Dodd, DE, Clemson
The Broncos' defense obviously is already top notch, and continuing to add playmakers like Dodd will keep it that way.
